Chapter 12

I still hadn’t remembered to buy any Eye Sleep Masks, a fact I remembered as soon as I woke up again at five the following morning. I grabbed my phone and looked at my weather app. It said that the sun rose at 4:45 a.m. in East Bucklebury. Why, that was positively uncivilised! In Melbourne, the sun rose much later than that.

I was going to make a list. Eye Sleep Masks and blockout interior roller blinds were at the top of that list. I would have to stop telling myself that and actually take action.

I supposed that one positive out of waking so early would be that I wouldn’t miss any early morning appointments. The negatives of waking so early were too numerous to mention, not least because I was having a gorgeous dream about beaches, back rubs, and pina coladas.

A few hours later, I collected Athanasius. “You look nice,” I said, as he got into the car. He was dressed in a dark grey suit, a crisp white shirt, and a checked bow tie. I could see my reflection in his black shoes.

“Thanks. Would you like me to drive? I know the way.”

“No way!” I shrieked before I caught myself. I amended that to, “No thanks. I’ll have to drive to Southport for work soon, so I might as well get used to driving there.” I flashed what I hoped was a winning smile at him. Nevertheless, he did appear to be somewhat offended.

“Do you want to go on the M1 or the Gold Coast Highway?” he asked me.

I shrugged. “How would I know? I was lucky to make it here in one piece in the first place.”

“Well then, we should take the scenic route, the Gold Coast Highway.”

“Hang on a moment. The scenic route won’t take us hours out of our way and involve sharply winding roads without guard rails next to precipitous cliffs, or maybe deserted dirt roads that stretch on forever?” I asked him, thinking of the so-called scenic routes around most of Australia.

He laughed. “No, nothing like that. The M1 is very busy. The Gold Coast Highway is somewhat less so, but it takes longer. Actually, you won’t quite reach the Gold Coast Highway. I meant you have the choice of going near the water’s edge or going on the M1.”

He was being as confusing as usual. “Well, going near the water does sound better.”

“It’s all broadwater, as far as Southport,” he said, “but you’ll drive past lots of nice canals and you’ll see some lovely homes on them.”

“Okay then, let’s go. You direct me.”

It turned out that Athanasius was quite a good navigator, much to my surprise. We hadn’t gone far before I began to enjoy the drive. The houses were quite picturesque, a mixture of old homes with brand new homes, and most of the older homes had been entirely renovated. “How much further is it?” I asked him when we reached a place called Labrador. “What a nice name. I like Labradors.
